Policy & Practice
Our Mission
The goal of our charity is to bring as much as possible from feature films to education throughout the United Kingdom. We aim to provide teachers in schools and colleges with powerful tools to help them in their work. As a result we hope to preserve and increase our national film culture by building a new generation of cinema-goers who also look beyond the major blockbusters to appreciate independent productions and world cinema.
The services that we provide – many of which are free-of-charge - can be described as follows:
- Educational resources for use in teaching
- Events, screenings and festivals for school groups
- Training and development for teachers
Cinema for everyone
Central to our mission is to ensure that our services reach young people without any prejudice towards or against any particular culture, religion, economic status or geographic location. We also aim to provide – and to campaign for the further provision of – cinema and film for young people with a sensory impairment, physical disability or behavioural disorder.
2.4 million children every year
In the average year our activities reach an estimated 2.4million schoolchildren across the country, or just over 25% of the entire population in that age range. Our flagship festival, National Schools Film Week, is the largest event of its kind in the World and in 2008 took 1 in 20 children of school-going age to the cinema for free.
Unfortunately, the scope of our work can be limited by our financial resources and other factors beyond our control. We hope that you will be able to support our work either in your own professional capacity or simply by writing to us with positive feedback that we can use in our lobbying and fundraising activities.
