Film Education to close
Industry announcement
FILM EDUCATION TO CLOSE AND ALL STAFF TO BE MADE REDUNDANT
Film Education regrets to announce that it will be closing on the 26th of April 2013.
All 15 full-time and part-time Film Education staff will be made redundant.
National Schools Film Week will no longer take place and all Film Education activities will cease.
Film Education is the privately funded charity that provides award-winning curriculum-based teaching resources, teacher training and cinema-based events across the UK.
The closure of Film Education is as a result of the decision in November 2012 by its primary funder, Cinema First, to cease its financial support from the end of March 2013. At the same time, Cinema First made the committment to support the bid led by the publicly financed organisations, FILMCLUB and First Light, in their efforts to secure the £28 million Lottery funded BFI 5-19 film education scheme 2013-2017.
Film Education would like to thank the film distributors, exhibitors, Cinema First (AIM), filmmakers, creative talent and industry executives, as well as teaching professionals and students, for their support over the past 26 years. Their support enabled a unique, innovative and successful approach to educating future audiences and filmmakers about and through film.
Film Education is incredibly proud of its work over the years to support young people wanting to learn more about film and with teachers wanting to see film embedded across the National Curriculum. It is also proud that other countries have built their own models for film education based on Film Education’s initiative and experience.
The closure of Film Education brings to an end 26 years of:
- Regular engagement with teachers across the UK;
- Direct industry support for the use of film in the classroom;
- Providing film-related, curriculum linked, award-winning teaching resources;
- Training and workshops for educators on the use of film across a wide range of curriculum subjects. Events include the annual Film Industry Conference.
- Giving young people the opportunity to meet and talk to filmmakers and industry professionals;
- In-cinema experience of events such as National Schools Film Week, CineSchool, Sun Screens, preview screenings and Autism Friendly Screening Days; and
- Innovative initiatives such as CP3, Young Film Critic, Be ©reative and Film Card.
In 2012 alone Film Education’s activities included:
- 547,699 children and young people aged 5-19 attending our free in cinema screening events and festivals such as National Schools Film Week and CineSchool – 4.4 million children since the inaugural event in 1997;
- 27 film-related, curriculum-based resources, used by 1.6 million children and young people in the classroom;
- 24 training and CPD events attended by 1,021 teaching professionals;
- Innovative workshops attended by 524 students;
- More than 13,000 teachers in over 9,000 schools subscribed to Film Education’s fortnightly electronic newsletter;
- New resources made available to over 20,000 teachers in 18,000 schools across the UK; and
- 609,607 visits to www.filmeducation.org, a 58% increase on 2011.
Film Education hopes that the legacy of its work will speak volumes in the years to come.
