Furry Facts

Chipmunk fact file:

A chipmunk sits on the tarmac, looking at the camera and clutching a piece of food in its paws.

How it moves: Chipmunks walk on four legs but often stand on their hind legs, using their front claws to hold food, making it easier to break open nuts. They usually stay on the ground to forage for food but can climb quickly up trees to escape danger if necessary.

What it eats: Chipmunks eat insects, nuts, berries, seeds and grains and use the pouches in their cheeks to carry food to store in their burrows.

Where it lives: All but one species of chipmunk can be found in North America. They live in a range of habitats from alpine forests to desert land.

Avenging quality: Chipmunks have excellent senses of hearing, eyesight and smell and use a combination of these to search for food.

Fun fact: Chipmunks create large burrows and they keep their sleeping areas very clean by making tunnels to store any waste.
