Furry Facts

raccoon fact file:

a close-up shot of a raccoon, sitting in front of a hedge. It looks like it is rubbing its paws together and smiling!

How it moves: raccoons walk on four legs and can also climb trees. Because their back legs are longer than their front legs, they have a hunched appearance when they move.

What it eats: raccoons eat a variety of different foods; in the spring and summer they eat worms, insects and other animals but in the later months they prefer to eat nuts and fruit that contain more energy for them to survive over the winter when less food is available.

Where it lives: raccoons originally only lived in forests, but now can be found in mountainous areas, coastal marshes, and even urban areas where some people consider them to be pests. They originated in North America but their population has now spread across Europe and Asia.

Avenging quality: raccoons are very clever with their paws and have an amazing sense of touch.

Fun fact: raccoons are noted for their intelligence and studies have shown that they can pick locks and remember solutions to problems up to three years later!
