Task 1

Sights and Sounds

Play a film clip but only listen to it at first. Close your eyes so you can focus on the soundtrack. Don’t cheat! What different sounds do you hear and what is making them? Discuss what you think is happening in the clip.

1. A Boy Called Dad

2. Prince Caspian

3. The Fox and the Child

4. The Secret of Moonacre

Task: Think of onomatopoeia to describe each sound. Make a list of the sounds you hear and sketch or storyboard the scene you imagined.

Play the clip again but now watch and listen. Is the scene similar to what you drew? Are there any sounds you didn’t catch first time?

Focus on any music in the scene:

  • How does the music affect the mood?
  • How does it make you feel?
  • What does it tell us about the character’s feelings?
  • Does it change or stop at any point? Why?
  • How would a different piece of music affect the mood?

Task: Write your own version of the scene, it could be a voiceover narration for a character. Describe the sounds the character hears. Does the music give you ideas for any emotional vocabulary?
