The Class

Clip one: the staff

The staffroom at the start of term is the setting for introducing these characters and provides the audience with the teachers’ perspective on the school.

  1. What relationships are established in this clip? How natural or honest do these introductions seem to you?
  2. How is a sense of professional identity conveyed?
  3. Without having seen any of the pupils onscreen, what impressions of the school do you gain from watching this sequence? Identify which elements of this sequence are key to conveying this impression.

Clip two: the students

The class seat themselves for the first lesson of the year with François, their French teacher.

  1. To what extent would you say the students who form ‘The Class’ are representative of the education system generally?
  2. The students’ responses to François are improvised, though with clear instructions on how the dialogue will progress. In what ways do you think different audiences might react to this sequence?
