Journeys
The children in Africa United travel approximately 3,000 miles through seven countries from Rwanda to South Africa in order to be at the world cup. To travel the whole length of Great Britain from Lands End in Cornwall to John o' Groats in Scotland is about 900 miles. So the children's journey in Africa United can be compared to travelling the entire length of the Great Britain more than three times!
Download and print out the map below, label the countries and draw a line showing the journey made by the children in the film through each of these countries.
For discussion
- What do you know about any of these countries? What can you find out? Add your findings to the map, using sticky notes or labels and marking locations with arrows.
- How do you expect the children will travel? Look at this image (right) from the film. Do you think this is a typical example of how their journey might look? Why?
- A quest or a journey provides a useful structure to tell a story. Can you think of any other films you may have seen in which characters go on a long journey? Do they learn about themselves along the way? What do you expect the characters in Africa United might learn on their journey? Are there any clues in the film's title?
