How is our food produced?

Where does our food really come from? The packaging might feature a healthy animal standing in an open field, but as Food, Inc. reveals, the reality is often quite different.  Many of the food products available in American supermarkets, even those that present themselves as ‘farm fresh’, are actually products of a large-scale industrialised process.

In the following activity and the two that can be found on the Food, Inc. CD-ROM (‘Eco-shopping’ ‘Think Local’), you will look past the packaging and investigate the real story behind much of our food. You will examine and compare the various methods of farming and suggest ways of making food production more sustainable, recognising that every method can have its advantages and disadvantages.
