Activity 1: The Gobi Desert
The Story of the Weeping Camel is set in the Gobi Desert in Mongolia. It is very dry in the desert, sometimes only raining once every few years. The temperature can fall to minus 30°C in the winter and up to 50°C in the summer.
The desert is made up of different types of landscapes: from mountains to flat areas of dry desert, oases with palm trees to sand dunes.
Look at the poster for the film The Story of the Weeping Camel. Describe what you can see in the poster. What images give you clues about where the film is set? What does the poster tell us about the typical weather, animals and landscape of the desert?
If a film were to be made of your local area, what images would be used in the poster to advertise the film?
Design a poster that shows where the film is set. Think about including images that show the climate, landscape, buildings, people and animals that are typical for your local area.
