Director Michael Winterbottom presents a beautiful adaptation of Thomas Hardy's Tess of the D'Urbervilles. In the countryside of Rajasthan, Trishna, daughter of an auto-rickshaw driver, meets Jay, son of a wealthy hotel developer. Jay helps Trishna when her family is in trouble and soon the attraction between them grows; A couple in love, they visit Mumbai for Jay to introduce the country girl to his cosmopolitan art scene friends in the modern city. However, the strength of traditional ways endures, and for Trishna as for the original Tess, this can only lead to tragedy.
