Anticipation
As well as in SKIN, Sandra Laing’s story has been told in her biography When She Was White written by an American author Judith Stone. This account was fashioned from similar sources – public records, press articles, documentary and news footage, interviews with Sandra herself and others associated with her life – as those used by the screenwriters on the film SKIN. It is important to note, that this biography was written in parallel to the film’s screenplay and was not its principal ‘literary’ origin. Despite this, as an extensive non-fiction narrative, it provides a fascinating backdrop to the film version of the story.
